BLACKSBURG, Va. —
Yet another matchup between the Hokies and Mountaineers is coming to Blacksburg.
The Virginia Tech women’s soccer program was selected on Sunday to host the second and third rounds of the NCAA tournament next weekend.
The Hokies (17-4-2), who received one of the tourney’s top seeds, will take on fourth-seeded West Virginia (16-3-3) at 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Field on the Virginia Tech campus.
Boston and Santa Clara meet at 2 p.m. at the same site. The winners of Friday’s games play the third-round game at 1 p.m. next Sunday. All four teams are nationally ranked.
This is the sixth consecutive year that Tech has been selected to the NCAA tournament and it is their first-ever No. 1 seed. The squad is No. 4 in the current NSCAA national rankings.
The Hokies, who have five wins this year over nationally-ranked opponents, set a record for wins in a season by defeating UMBC 2-0 in the first round last Friday, outshooting the Retrievers 20-1.
West Virginia, currently ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA coaches’ poll, bested Rutgers on penalty kicks, 3-0, on Saturday evening in Morgantown. The Mountaineers had 26 shots, nine on goal, in that game. Sara Keane made seven saves of Rutgers shots.
West Virginia claimed the first Big 12 Conference team title in school history on Nov. 10 by beating Oklahoma State 1-0 in Kansas City on a goal by Ashley Lawrence. It was the Mountaineers’ third conference title in four years. WVU has won 13 of its past 14 matches.
In their last meeting, Virginia Tech beat the Mountaineers 1-0 in Morgantown in an NCAA tournament match on Nov. 12, 2011.
All four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA national tournament bracket were awarded to the four ACC semifinalists from last week’s conference tournament. Virginia, Florida State and North Carolina all hold the top spot in their quadrant as well as the Hokies.
