Harris, leaving WVU, tweets ‘I am a Spartan now’

MORGANTOWN — Eron Harris is trading the gold and blue of West Virginia University for the green of Michigan State, according to multiple media reports on Monday evening.

The 6-foot-3 guard, who averaged 17.2 points for the Mountaineers last season, posted on his Twitter account, “I am a Spartan now ... can’t wait to get started at my new home!”

He won’t be in a game uniform anytime soon. NCAA transfer rules require that he sit out a season if he signs with another Division I school.

On March 24, Harris issued a statement closing the door on his time in Morgantown.

“I have enjoyed my time at West Virginia University the past two years, but I want to transfer closer to home,” the Indianapolis resident said then. “I want to be closer to my family, especially being around my little brother.”

The university gave him his release, a few weeks after he earned All-Big 12 honorable mention. His scoring average was fourth best in the conference.

Another guard, Terry Henderson, announced in May that he was leaving WVU. ESPN reported at that time that head coach Bob Huggins revealed that forward Remi Dibo was planning to play professionally in his native France, skipping his senior season.

Harris, Henderson and Dibo contributed 36 points per game for West Virginia, which ended last season 17-16.

Under head coach Tom Izzo, the Spartans were 29-9 last season and were ranked fourth nationally. The squad reached the Elite Eight before losing to eventual national champion Connecticut 60-54.

Izzo’s Michigan State teams have reached the Final Four six times and won a national title in 2000.
