Akers scores nine as Herd pulls away from Rams

HUNTINGTON — The Marshall Thundering Herd came alive after halftime to defeat Bluefield College 63-41 at the Cam Henderson Center on Friday afternoon in Marshall’s first women’s basketball regular season game of the season.

Princeton resident McKenzie Akers was 3 for 6 from beyond the 3-point arc and scored nine points for Marshall (1-0). Although she did not start, Akers played 27 minutes, pulling down four rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Asia Wheeler led the Lady Rams with 15 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 6 for 12 from the field.

Destiny Tolliver and Janee Simmons had nine and eight rebounds respectively for Bluefield College, which listed Friday’s game as an exhibition. Tolliver added two blocks.

The Lady Rams trailed by a single point, 24-23 at halftime, and led the Herd 33-32 with 13:26 remaining. Marshall’s Leah Scott scored 12 straight points soon after that for a 52-36 lead, and the Herd rolled to the win.

After making 21 percent of their shots in the first half, Marshall was 13 for 29 after the break.

Scott was 6 for 8 from the field and 5 for 6 at the foul line, leading all scorers with 19 points. Suporia Dickens had 10 points and eight boards, and Chukuka Ezeigbo contributed eight points, 14 rebounds and all four blocks on the MU score sheet.

Marshall forced 22 turnovers and turned them into 21 points.

The Lady Rams travel to Bluefield State on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. “Battle of the Bluefields” game.
