WVU handles Fairmont in high-gear tuneup

MORGANTOWN — The only preseason tune-up for the West Virginia Mountaineers resulted in an 89-70 victory over neighboring Fairmont State on Monday night in the WVU Coliseum.

Eron Harris nailed three 3-pointers on his way to 31 points for the Mountain-eers, who open the regular season Friday in Morgan-town against Mount St. Mary’s.

Freshman Nathan Adrian was 6 of 10 from behind the arc for 21 points for West Virginia, which got 85 points from its perimeter players.

Gary Browne contributed 18 points and Juwan Staten added 13. Freshman Devin Williams contributed 14 rebounds.

Fairmont State, coached by former WVU assistant Jerrod Calhoun and assisted by former standout Mountaineer guard Joe Mazzula, got 23 points from Stevie Browning.

After leading by 12 at halftime, the Mountaineers preserved a double digit lead for the entire second half.

Fairmont State, a member of the new Mountain East Conference, started the game fouling and continued to foul throughout as officials are more closely watching defensive hand-checking as college basketball looks to make the game more free flowing this year.

West Virginia capitalized by making 37 of 54 free throws.
