BLUEFIELD — Trey Lambert, a product of Tazewell and a senior at Liberty University, has compiled a 5-1 record with a 2.82 ERA in six starts for the Flames this season. The 6-foot-4 Lambert has struck out 20 in 38 1/3 innings for Liberty, which is currently 18-7 on the season. Lambert was a valedictorian at Tazewell, who was 9-1 with a 1.23 ERA as a senior for the Bulldogs in 2009.
Former Richlands two-sport standouts and brothers, Bradley and Reece Strong, continue to produce on the diamond for Western Carolina. Bradley, a junior, right, is batting .330 with a team-leading 31 hits, 27 runs scored, 10 stolen bases and four triples. He also has four doubles and 18 RBI for the 13-9 Catamounts. Reece, a sophomore, has played in 20 games, batting .296 with six RBI and eight runs scored.
One week after winning the NCAA Division II Indoor Championship in the 800meters, Shawnee Carnett was back on the track, this time outdoors at a meet last weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. Carnett earned Mountain East Conference Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week winning the 800-meter run, running in a time of 2:09.85, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time and is currently the second-fastest time in the country. She also ran the 1,500 meters and finished in ninth.
•Virginia Tech will begin spring football practice on Thursday, and will continue three days a week until the White and Maroon spring game is held on April 26 at Lane Stadium.
•Marshall began spring practice on Tuesday, and will hold its Green and White spring game, also on April 26, •West Virginia and Virginia will host spring games on April 12.
•Bluefield College began spring practice on March 18, and will end without a spring game on April 12.
•Concord still hasn’t announced its spring schedule.
