Rams nip Rio Grande in overtime at Dome

White leads Lady Rams to 10-point win

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Finally, the nine-game losing streak is over.

Josh Nesbit canned two free throws with 5 seconds left on the clock to lead Bluefield College to an 80-78 overtime win over Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday at the Dome Gymnasium.

Nesbit rebounded a miss by Devin Page, was fouled and made both free throws.

Byron Carpenter scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Rams.

Bluefield (8-15, 3-13), which has won just twice in 2013, also received 15 points by Eric Swift, and 12 points and seven boards from Nesbit.

Karl Moore led four Rio Grande (8-17, 3-12) in double figures with 16, and also added 12 rebounds. D.D. Joiner scored 15, followed by Austin McMaster with 13 and Dominick Haynes with 12.

The clubs played even thoughout. It was 38-38 at halftime and 70-70 at the end of regulation. The Rams outscored Rio Grande 10-8 in the extra period.

Bluefield will visit St. Catharine in Kentucky on Thursday.

Women: Bluefield 80, Rio Grande 70

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Ashley White scored 24 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out seven assists to lead the Lady Rams to victory.

Janee Simmons also had a big game for Bluefield, contributing 15 points, 12 boards, four steals and three blocked shots.

Teqa McNeal added 23 points and Monique Robson canned 17.

Shardai Morrison-Fountain led Rio Grande (6-19, 0-15) with 19 points, while Tinesha Taylor added 16.

Bluefield (14-10, 7-9) will visit Mid-South Conference foe St. Catharine on Thursday.
