Fla. State women beat Hokies for eighth straight time

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Chelsea Davis scored 19 points to lead No. 22 Florida State in a 70-56 victory over Virginia Tech on Sunday.

The win was the Seminoles’ eighth straight in the rivalry, and Florida State (17-3, 7-2 ACC) has won the past four contests by an average of 27 points.

Monet Teller paced the Hokies (7-12, 1-7) with 18 points, and Uju Ugoka added 10 points on 5-of-20 shooting as Virginia Tech made 37.9 percent (25 of 66) from the floor.

Alexis Lloyd came off the bench for Virginia Tech to nail a three-pointer with 8:58 to play, tying the contest 45-45, but Florida State responded with a 25-11 run.

The Hokies committed 23 turnovers and had just 10 assists. Florida State had 11 assists.

Davis hit 7 of 12 from the field as the Seminoles shot 45.5 percent (25 of 55), just short of their season average of 48.4 percent, which began the day third nationally.

Both teams sank 25 field goals, but at the foul line the Seminoles made 19 of 27 free throws while Virginia Tech converted 2 of 3.

Ugoka was the game’s leading rebounder with nine boards. The Hokies held a rebounding edge of 39 to 35, and connected on 12 second-chance shots.

Florida State’s Leonor Rodriguez added 14 points and also had four steals.
