HONAKER, Va. —
A good service game is supposed to be something Honaker can rely on during a rebuilding season.
It served the defending Black Diamond District champs well on Thursday.
The Lady Tigers swept Grundy, 3-0, in BDD action at A.P. Baldwin Gymnasium.
Honaker had far fewer service errors and notched more than twice as many service points in a 25-14, 25-20, 25-22 victory.
It was a balanced effort, too, for the Lady Tigers (6-1). Montanna Compton and Kaitlen Hubbard each contributed nine service points and Laura Hess and Marisa Hughes added eight apiece.
“I told the girls before the season serving was going to be one of our strong points,” Honaker coach Amy Davidson said. “We struggled with our serves earlier this week, but we worked hard on it in practice (Wednesday) and it paid off.”
The final two sets were hotly contested by Grundy, which got off to a slow start in game one, but took leads in games two and three with more crisp passing and an improving game around the net.
“I’m proud of the girls, they battled to the end,” first-year Grundy coach Kasey Cantrell said. “We covered better in the back row and we made a few mistakes in the front row, but we had a lot of attack, too.”
Lexie Elswick had nine kills and six service points and Sarah Boyd added four kills for Grundy (0-5). Hannah Lowe had 10 service points.
Katie Caudill led Honaker with 15 assists and Compton added seven. Hughes had a match-high 15 digs. Hess had nine kills.
