Akers, Catron star on college hardwoods

BLUEFIELD —  Former Princeton star basketball player McKenzie Akers scored eight points, including a pair of 3s, and also dished out an assist in 18 minutes, leading Marshall to an 82-59 win over Southern Illinois on Wednesday afternoon. Suporia Dickens paced the Herd (2-3) with 16 points.

 Former Tazewell basketball standout Taylor Catron has been selected as the Hollins University Student-Athlete of the Week. Just a freshman, Catron led Hollins (2-3) last week, contributing 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists against Eastern Mennonite. She added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in a loss to Randolph College.
