Akers honored by Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD — Rick Akers was a walk-on at BSC and played from 1985-88, competing in two conference championship games. He made All-Tournament Team, second team All-Conference, and in his senior year he won the conference’s Sparky Adams Heart and Hustle Award — ony the second Bluefield State player to receive that honor. Akers said about playing for BSC, ‘I played with a great bunch of players, we were well coached, and I had a lot of fun.” Akers still plays basketball in the Beckley Summer League, according to the Bluefield State sports information office.
