Hokies, Mounties picked in MLB draft

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Nats pick Ballou

HUNTINGTON — Isaac Ballou, senior centerfielder for the Thundering Herd baseball team, was selected in the 15th round (466 overall) of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon.

Ballou, a native of Smithfield, Va., was the second player from Marshall’s 2013 squad to be selected and the 18th draft selection under Marshall head coach Jeff Waggoner.

The final pick of the 15th round, Ballou was the seventh Marshall player, including Aaron Blair who was taken 36th overall this year, to be selected in one of the first 15 rounds of the First Year Player Draft.

Ballou, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 36th round of the 2011 draft, was the first outfielder selected by the Nationals.

In four seasons with Marshall, Ballou put together a decorated career in which he set four individual records and ranked among the top 10 in several statistical categories.

His career walks (129) and career triples (16) were most among any player in Marshall history while his seven triples in 2011 and 43 walks in 2012 also stand as records.

Ballou ranks second all-time in Marshall history with 64 career stolen bases, fourth all-time with 722 at-bats, fourth all-time with 211 hits, fourth all-time with 144 runs scored, and ninth all-time with 287 total bases.

Ballou was an All-Conference USA first team selection in 2013 after leading the team in hitting (.328), on-base percentage (.438), slugging percentage (.433), hits (66), walks (37), doubles (17), runs (40), and stolen bases (13).

He was third-best in C-USA in on-base percentage, fourth in walks, runs, and stolen bases, eighth in batting average, and ninth in hits.

Ballou followed Marshall junior pitcher Aaron Blair (36th overall to the Arizona Diamondbacks) as the second member of the Herd taken in this year’s draft.
