Anton Hutchins and Dominic Phillips combined for 50 points, and West Virginia State overcame a late deficit to defeat Bluefield State 86-83 in the Yellow Jackets’ season-opener on Wednesday night.
Bluefield State led West Virginia State 80-75 with 2:46 left to play, but were outscored 11-3 from that point.
Hutchins led West Virginia State (1-0) with 28 points and Phillips added 22. The duo had eight rebounds apiece, and Phillips dished out four assists. Terry Wood added 13 points and Juan Johnson had eight points and nine boards.
Five Bluefield State players reached double figures, led by 18 apiece from Shakir Dunning and Geron Tate. Treon Claiborne added 14, Remar Brothers tossed in 12 and Samuel Ouedraogo added 10 points.
Ouedraogo had an amazing 25 rebounds for the Big Blues, while Tate pulled down 11 boards.
Bluefield State (0-5) will play North Greenville, S.C. in a tournament at Banner Elk, N.C. on Friday. The Blues will play the host team, Lees-McRae, on Saturday.
