Legends Poll: Oregon stumbles after loss to Stanford

The No. 2 spot in the Legends Poll has a new name for the first time this season.

Oregon suffered its first loss of the year Thursday night, 26-20, to Stanford, which opened the door for Florida State to climb in the Legends Poll.

The Seminoles, who trounced Wake Forest, 59-3, are now second only to top-ranked Alabama, which this week received its first unanimous No. 1 ranking of the season.

The Crimson Tide made a statement with a 38-17 victory over LSU Saturday night. The loss sent No. 15 LSU tumbling four spots.

No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Baylor and No. 5 Stanford all moved up a spot in the rankings this week. Oregon fell four spots to No. 6.

No. 7 Auburn continued its quiet climb up the rankings and will face another tough when No. 25 Georgia visits next weekend.

Clemson, Missouri and Texas A&M rounded out the top 10.

No. 17 Oklahoma dropped seven spots after No. 4 Baylor undressed the Sooners in Waco on Thursday —- the biggest drop in the rankings this week.

No. 24 Texas was the lone newcomer in the top 25 this week. Texas Tech dropped out.

  • Don't blame voters for low turnout

Suppose nobody votes this year. On Nov. 4 the doors to the polling places are thrown open, and there isn't anyone in line. No absentee ballots are filed. No one litigates, charging either fraud or discrimination, because there weren't any voters.
It won't happen. But if it did, pundits and activists would surely blame public apathy for such a catastrophe. I'd name a different culprit: the major parties, their candidates and their acolytes in the news media.
