Accused killer says shooting much different from movie

WEATHERFORD, Texas —

A 17-year-old wrote that he spent a portion of the afternoon before he killed his mother and sister watching -- for the third time that week -- Rob Zombie’s “Halloween,” which tells a story of a boy who murders his family members.

“While watching it, I was amazed at how at ease the boy was during the murders and how little remorse he had afterward,” Evans wrote in a confession document introduced in court. “Afterward, I was thinking to myself it would be the same for me when I kill someone.”

Jacob “Jake” Ryan Evans is accused in the Oct. 4 shooting deaths of his mother, 47-year-old Jami Evans, and sister, 15-year-old Mallory Evans. He has been charged with capital murder in the case.

The statement was released this week over the objections of his court-appointed attorneys.

In it he described how he changed his mind about stabbing the two family members instead using a .22-caliber handgun to commit the crimes because he didn’t want them to suffer any longer than necessary.

Evans described himself as “very shocked and scared” following the shooting. He said he had planned to kill other family members, but couldn’t go along with his original plans.

“I was very sad because I felt like my own family were becoming the people I hate,” Evans wrote. “I know now, though, that I’m done with killing. It’s the most dreadful and terrifying thing I will ever experience. And what happened . . . will haunt me forever.”
