War correspondent donates two Emmys to journalism college

— NORMAN, Okla. — Mike Boettcher, University of Oklahoma journalism professor and veteran war correspondent, has donated his two Emmy Awards for an ABC Nightline program on U.S. military in Afghanistan to OU's journalism college.

Boettcher was awarded the Emmys, the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for outstanding feature and best story in a newscast.

The half-hour program on Nightline was titled, "American Valor: The Land of the Brave." It featured battlefield scenes from Afghanistan. His son, Carlos Boettcher, was the producer, and OU students put together a multimedia news package in Boettcher's "Afghan 101" course.

Boettcher said he donated the Emmys to the journalism college in recognition of the students' participation. He said their efforts “kept me and my son inspired to press on during our two years in Afghanistan.”

Boettcher also said it was the first time an active college professor has received an Emmy while also being an active war correspondent.

Boettcher covered wars and terrorist attacks around the globe for NBC News and other U.S. news outlets for more than three decades. He is an OU graduate.
