54 shaved heads for cancer-ridden firefighter

SALEM, N.H. — The brotherhood of firefighters is on display in this southern New Hampshire community with the shaved heads of the 54 members of the fire department.

Every one of the town's frefighters cut their hair down to the scalp in support of Capt. Steve mcKenna, 53, a colleague fighting for his life from intestinal cancer.

McKenna, the married father of two, has battled the disease for four years, going on medical leave in February. He said doctors have given him only a few months to live and that the visible support from his fellow firefighters has moved him to tears.

"It's just the brotherhood," said McKenna. "I'm not ashamed to say I had tears running down my cheeks. It means a lot."
