Ga. deputy suspected of pawning weapons

— DALTON, Ga. — A sheriff’s deputy in Georgia was placed on paid administrative leave while officials investigate reports that he pawned two guns he was issued for duty.

Whitfield County Maj. John Gibson said a routine check of area pawn shops revealed a shotgun and a rifle issued the deputy had been pawned.

“He was trying to gain funds by pawning the weapon,” Gibson said. “That in itself can be theft by conversion.”

The sheriff’s office will ask District Attorney Bert Poston to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
