Routine Pa. stop nets $1 million in heroin

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. — State police found much more than expected when an officer stopped a car on the Pennsylvania Turnpike for driving 14 miles over the posted speed limit.

When Trooper Michael Volk checked the car’s trunk, after obtaining a search warrant,  he found an estimated $1 million worth of heroin. Law enforcement authorities are calling it one of the biggest drug busts on the turnpike in Somerset County, Pa., history.

William Charles Green IV, 27, was arraigned on a charge of possession with intent to deliver heroin. He is being held on $750,000 bond. Police estimated there were 1,000 "bricks" of the drug in the trunk.

Investigators wouldn’t say where Green picked up the drugs or where he was headed.

“We believe this to be one of the largest seizures of a controlled substance ever in Somerset County,” District Attorney Lisa Lazzari-Strasiser said Monday during a news conference  at the Somerset County Courthouse.
