Police searching for suspects in Beckley murder

Beckley — By Carra HigginsReports late Thursday evening indicated that Alfred Pittman was arrested at a Charleston hospital by Charleston Police. Updates on this as they become available at www.register-herald.com

Beckley Police are looking for three men suspected of the first degree murder of Shawn Rucker.

Detective Jeff Shumate said Thursday that Alfred Pittman, 23; Corneallus “Ty” Taylor, 20; and Dewayne Lane, 22; allegedly entered Rucker’s First Street home on Sept. 26 and shot him. Rucker died a short time later at an area hospital.

Shumate said the men had been living in the Beckley area during the past few months, but there is a possibility that one or more of them have left the Beckley area. He asks anyone in the community with information about their whereabouts to call the Beckley Police Department at 304-256-1720 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-STOP.

The motive behind Rucker’s murder is still being investigated, but Shumate said it appears as though it began as an attempted potential robbery.

Help and tips from the community led police to charge Pittman, Taylor and Lane with Rucker’s murder. Shumate said police are very thankful for the information they have received from the community so far and thinks residents of the Beckley area are wanting to stop further crime.

“Had it not been for that information, it would have been a whole lot longer of a process,” Shumate said. “With that information ... we were able to identify the three subjects responsible for the murder.”

In a case that may be related to Rucker's death, one man and one juvenile are being sought in connection to a late Wednesday shooting on Hager Street that ended with one person being sent to the hospital.

Beckley Police have identified Davin Thornton, 22, and a 17-year-old male as the individuals involved in that shooting that may have stemmed from an argument about the murder of Rucker.

Shumate said Thornton and the juvenile are wanted for malicious wounding, wanton endangerment and attempted first degree murder.

Thornton and the juvenile are at large and anyone with information about their location is asked to call the Beckley Police Department at 304-256-1720 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-STOP.

That victim of the Wednesday night shooting is in stable condition at an area hospital, Shumate said.
