Man arrested after hiding in 14-year-old girl's closet for 6 days

ALBEMARLE, N.C. — A North Carolina man faces the possibility of life in prison on charges of statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl after police said he spent six days hidden in her closet.

Jarred Ashley Workman, 27, of Albemarle, was charged with 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sex offense, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Workman appeared in an Iredell County court Tuesday. A judge informed him that he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of all the offenses.

According to Lt. Bill Hamby, Workman and the victim met and chatted online for about a week. They then made arrangements to meet in a wooded area near the girl’s home on April 27. Once they met, Hamby said, the girl invited Workman to her residence, where she said Workman sexually assaulted her.

An investigation revealed that Workman managed to live in the teen’s bedroom closet from April 27 until May 2, when the girl’s mother discovered him when she went to put away her daughter’s clothes, Hamby said.

“(The girl) was bringing him food and drinks,” Hamby said. “The mother noticed that food was missing more than usual.”

When the mother found Workman in the closet, she asked who she was, Hamby said. Workman told her his name and falsely gave his age as 19. He then fled the home as the mother called 911.

Iredell County authorities searched the woods with the aid of a K-9. His tracks led to a road where investigators believe he had a vehicle parked.

However, Workman left his wallet and cell phone inside the closet. Inside his wallet was an obituary of his mother and the telephone number of an attorney in Albemarle.

Workman turned himself in to police Monday afternoon. He is being jailed in lieu of a $1 million bond for the sex offenses.
