Bride dies, groom injured in car crash five days before wedding

A Georga college basketball coach was seriously injured and his fiancee killed when their car struck a concrete bridge support on Interstate-85 south of Atlanta Monday night while en route to Mobile, Ala., to get married Saturday.

Georgia State Patrol investigators identified the driver of the car as John Redman, 23, assistant basketball coach at Dalton State College in northern Georgia. He suffered multple injuries to the head and upper body, they said. Redman is the son of former longtime LPGA golf player Susie Kirk.

Killed in the crash was Brittany Huber, 25,a native of Mobile and a teacher's assistant at an elementary school in Dalton. Investigators said she died at the scene, likely upon the car's impact.

State Patrol officials said the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. (EDT) 40 miles south of Atlanta. They said weather did not contribute to the accident; that Redman lost control of his 2008 Lexus, skidded into the highway median and then slammed into the bridge support for an overpass road.

Investigators said the initial impact occurred on the front passenger side of the vehicle where Huber was sitting. They said Redman was unconscious when medical crews arrived, and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families at this impossibly hard time," said Dalton State athletic director Derek Waugh. "Please keep them in your prayers."

Waugh described Redman's fiancee as "an amazing person who was loved by all who met and knew her."

Redman is in his first year as a coach at Dalton State. He was a standout basketball player at Spanish Fort, Alabama High School and also played for Spring Hill College in Mobile.

His mother is a member of the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame. She played on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour for two decades, winning over a millon dollars. Another son is a sophomore basketball player at Spring Hill College.
