Ex-gang leader killed in prison attack

— VALDOSTA, Ga. — The former leader of one of Atlanta's most notorious gangs was killed in prison this week when he was attacked by other inmates, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Darryl "Mac Jones" Christmas, 33, was serving a life sentence at Valdosta State Prison on multiple charges of murder and aggravated assault for his role in a brutal series of gang-related deaths in Atlanta. Christmas was jumped shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Prosecutors said Christmas, from New Jersey, wanted to quickly gain a foothold in Atlanta after the Nine Trey Bloods were infused with new leadership in 2008. That fall, gang members drove to an Atlanta house, jumped from a vehicle and stabbed two men on a porch because one refused to allow his girlfriend to leave with the gang, according to media reports and court testimony.

Two days later, a member of the Bloods who planned to leave the gang was executed along with a teenage friend. When the gang member's girlfriend threatened to report the crime, Bloods members came to her house, shot and killed her teenage son hiding in a closet, killed her dog, and aimed a gun at her face. She survived because the gun jammed.

Christmas' lawyers had argued he was merely a member of the gang, not its leader. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into his death.
