MORNING UPDATE: National Weather Service's Tornado Watch includes both Southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia

BLACKSBURG, Va. — At 9:20 a.m., Friday morning, the Blacksburg, Va., office of the National Weather Service posted a tornado watch for Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe and Summers counties in southern West Virginia as well as Tazewell, Bland, Buchanan, Wythe and Giles counties in Virginia.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service said that meteorologists in Morristown, Tenn., were watching a weather cell that prompted them to issue a tornado warning. The Blacksburg office issues a warning in Washington County, Va., in response.

“We have had a few showers that have passed through that we have watched closely, but that was the only warning we have issued,” the Weather Service spokesperson in Blacksburg said.

The Watch is in effect until 4 p.m., on Friday.
