WYTHEVILLE, Va. — Two people are dead following three separate accidents that have shut down a section of Interstate 81 in Wythe County.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the first accident involved a tractor-trailer that overturned in the southbound lanes. Moments later, a southbound passenger vehicle hit the rig.

Geller says the driver of the passenger vehicle died during transport to a hospital. The tractor-trailer driver escaped before the rig was hit and wasn’t injured.

A northbound tractor-trailer ran off the left side of the interstate moments after the second accident, hit a bridge and crashed onto Route 90 below the highway. The tractor-trailer caught fire and its driver died at the scene. A passenger was ejected and suffered serious injuries.

The first accident was reported at 3:23 a.m. Tuesday.
