BLUEFIELD — Mercer County authorities are investigating the death of a Princeton man who was hit by a train in Kegley on Monday morning.

Delmar Eugene Chambers Jr., 44, was struck around the train trestle overlooking U.S. Route 19 at 2:39 a.m., according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy C.K. Lester and Senior Deputy W.C. Wilborn responded to the incident. In a press release from the sheriff’s office, the engineer of the Norfolk Southern train said he saw a man wearing a dark jacket sitting on the tracks with his head in his hands. He could not get the train stopped in time and the man made no attempts to get out of the way.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad Police, Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and the Princeton Rescue Squad responded to the scene. Wilborn is investigating the incident.
