Strong storms cause damage across region, concert evacuated in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD — Strong storms swept through the region this evening downing trees, knocking out power and forcing

the evacuation of hundreds from the Second Chance Concert in Bluefield.

The storm struck the region at 8:30 p.m. knocking down trees across the region. Emergency officials reported a tree striking a house in Bland County. Power lines are reported down in the Athens section of Mercer County and many other areas.

Firefighters are currently fighting two brush fires that were apparently caused by downed power lines.

The Second Chance Rocks the Virginias concert was evacuated at 8:45 p.m. Emergency officials report that cell phone service, and long-distance service, are out in parts of the region.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., has posted a severe thunderstrom warning for the region.
