Mercer County firefighters batting three different brush fires

BLUEFIELD — Firefighters are currently on the scene of at least three brush fires now burning in rural areas of Mercer County.

One fire has covered approximately 145 acres on Herndon Mountain in the Oakvale area, said Christopher White, forestry supervisor-Fire Region 2 South, for the state Division of Forestry. A second fire has been reported along Southern Hollow Road in the Elgood area, and a third is in the Pigeon Creek area.

The brush fire at Pigeon Creek was started by a brush pile fire, and the Herndon fire was arson, White said. The cause of the Southern Hollow Road fire has not been determined.

The Athens, Oakvale, East River, and Green Valley-Glenwood Volunteer Fire Departments were fighting the blazes along with a unit of the state Forestry Division, White said.
