A former PikeView High School teacher and coach was arrested Monday on multiple sexual charges involving juveniles.
Jonathan Kirk, 34, a former physical education teacher and assistant varsity football coach, is charged with use of obscene matter with intent to seduce a minor, use of minors in filming sexually explicit content, distribution and display of obscene matter, sexual abuse by a parent or custodian, and soliciting a minor via computer, according to Sgt. M.D. Clemons, with the Crimes Against Children Unit of the West Virginia State Police. In all, Clemons said Kirk is facing 18 separate counts. Kirk was arraigned on the charges this afternoon before Magistrate Susan Honaker.
Kirk resigned from his position in January, and his resignation was accepted by the Mercer County Board of Education. Kirk ended a term as PikeView’s assistant baseball coach in July 2012.
Mercer County school board member Mary Alice Kaufman confirmed Kirk’s resignation during an earlier interview in January. Kaufman said school officials suspected a violation of school board policy. She said the board of education is cooperating with police in the investigation.
