Jurors have found a McDowell County woman not guilty of first-degree murder and declared a mistrial on a conspiracy charge.
Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Hatcher fought back tears today after a jury found her not guilty of first-degree murder in connections with the death of her father-in-law and longtime War mayor Dr. Thomas Hatcher.
The jurors found Hatcher not guilty of first-degree murder, but were unable to reach a verdict on a second count of conspiracy.
Circuit Court Judge Rudoplh J. Murensky II declared a mistrial on the conspiracy charge.
Murensky set a Feb. 24, 2014, new trial date. Hatcher was remanded back to the custody of the McDowell County Correctional Center, but is expected to be bonded out this afternoon.
Prosecuting Attorney Edward Kornish said the state will try Hatcher again on the conspiracy charge.
Tom Hatcher was found dead shortly before noon on July 17, 2012, by city of War employees who went to check on him when he did not appear for work.
