The McDowell County Commission rejected a proposed increase in real estate and personal property taxes Thursday after a crowd estimated at 200 spoke in opposition to the tax increase.
After rejecting the proposed hike, the commissioners then instructed their accountant to develop a budget that reflects a 5 percent across the board reduction in county services.
Due to the size of the crowd that showed up for Thursday’s meeting, the public hearing had to be moved from the commission offices in Welch to the courtroom of Circuit Court Judge Rudolph J. Murensky II.
