Black ice reported in McDowell County — officials warn of dangerous road conditions

WELCH —  Drivers in McDowell County are urged to use caution Thursday morning due to a county-wide problem with black ice.

John Sidote, a public information officer with the McDowell County 911 Emergency Communications Center, said a two-car accident has been reported on Route 16 in north Welch.

“We had light amount of rain this morning, but with the freezing temperatures and cold pavement you have to watch on roads, parking lots, sidewalks —everywhere,” he said. “It’s gotten pretty rough. It’s only about 32 degrees out.”

Sidote encouraged drivers to use caution and “stay home if possible” to give the Department of Highways time to work the roads.
