Your BBQ and grilling library

Sellersburg, Ind. —

As we enter the winter season, the inevitable and unfortunate condition that alters our outdoor cooking schedule are shorter days. Don't get me wrong, I still get out there and cook.

I've done bone-in prime rib over hickory on a memorable Christmas day when we experienced about a foot of snow the night before and wind chills below zero.

It's still doable. But, your cooking time is bound to drop.

Take this season to expand your knowledge of grilling and creating great barbecue. How do you do that? Read, read, read.

I receive a lot of emails asking me what my favorite books on barbecue and grilling happen to be. I thought I would use this week's column to provide you with a list of some of the books that are in my kitchen and used frequently. It might be a great gift list for your favorite outdoor cook. And you'll
benefit with some great eats.

Ribs, Ribs, Outrageous Ribs – Steven Raichlen.

Bobby Flay's Boy Meets Grill – Bobby Flay
Marinades – Jim Tarantinorick.

The Barbecue America Cookbook – Rick Brown.

Paul Kirk's Championship Barbecue – Paul Kirk.

Fish and Shellfish Grilled and Smoked – Karen Adler.

Get Smokin' – The Folks at Cookshack.

Mastering the Grill – Andrew Schloss.

Love, Peace and Barbecue – Mike Mills.

Weber's Big Book of Grilling – Jamie Purviance.

World Champion Bar-B-Q – John Willingham.

America's Best BBQ – Ardie Davis.

The Big Book of Barkyard Cooking – Betty Rosbottom.

King of the Q's Blue Plate BBQ – Ted Reader.

Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking – Marcella Hazan.

These are all great books. You may notice the last selection is an Italian cookbook. I include it for two
reasons. First, I love Italian cooking, and this is the best Italian cookbook ever. Most consider it a classic. Second, a lot of barbecue can be used in these recipes to add a rustic flavor.

Do you have a favorite book not listed? Send me an email. I am always interested in adding to my barbecue / cooking library.
