Deaths
• Cherie A. Atwell, 43, 193 Dusty Miller St., Princeton, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Tazewell Community Hospital, Tazewell, Va. Rodriguez Pocahontas Funeral Home, Pocahontas, Va., was in charge of arrangements.
• Lawrence William Duncan, 55, of Kellysville, died Monday, March 24, 2008 in Montgomery, Ala. McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, N.C. was in charge of arrangements.
• Dr. Charles E. Lane, 85, of 212 W. Broadway St., Athens, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton was in charge of arrangements.
• Tyree Quinton Lester Jr., 60, of Sharps Turn Road, Kegley, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at his home. Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. was in charge of arrangements.
• Mrs. Ruth Short VanEtten, 87, of Blairsville, Ga., native of Mercer County, died March 31, 2008. Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.
• Russell Burman Wade, 61, of 903 Washington Ave., Princeton, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital. Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton was in charge of arrangements.
Obituary
MRS. SALLIE HARLAN FRIEDL
ATHENS — Mrs. Sallie Friedl, 96, of Athens, W.Va., passed away Monday, March 31, 2008, at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born February 5, 1912, on a farm near Tompkinsville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Arla (Thompson) Harlan. She earned her B.S. degree in Home Economics at Western Kentucky University and completed graduate work at the University of Kentucky. As a coed, she met Joe Friedl at Western Kentucky. They were married in 1935 before relocating to Gary, W.Va. Later they moved to Athens. Sallie was a retired teacher who began her career as an educator in a one room school in Rush Point, Ky. She taught for a total of 32 years at Kimball and Anawalt Elementary Schools in McDowell County, W.Va.; Bramwell, McComas, Oakvale and Montcalm High Schools in Mercer County, W.Va.; and Graham High School in Tazewell County, Va.
Mrs. Friedl supported numerous civic and community organizations. She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Athens, and Athens Chapter No. 33 of the Order of the Eastern Star where she was a former Grand Worthy Matron. She was also a member of Athens Women's Club, Athens PTA, Athens Band Parents, and the Association of College and University Women. She was active in the WV Retired Teachers Association. Sallie also wrote a column for the Princeton Times as a correspondent for Athens news events.
During World War II, she operated a community cannery in Tompkinsville, Ky. She taught subjects ranging from science to mathematics to physical education while raising a family of 5 children. She was honored in 2006 with the “Athens-Concord Elder Citizen Award” at the Athens-Concord Town Social.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 8 brothers, Ted, Stamper, Ezekiel, Aaron, Thompson, Robert, Abe and Maxey; and 3 sisters, Myrta, Corrina, and Della.
She is survived by her sister, Alice Hale of Tompkinsville, Ky.; sons, Joe Friedl, Jr. and wife Betty of Vienna, Va., Chester Friedl and wife June of Tazewell, Va., William Henry Friedl of Wauwatosa, Wis., and John Dexter Friedl and wife Jean of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Sally Mann and her husband Otis Mann, Jr. of Charleston, W.Va.; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the Concord United Methodist Church in Athens with the Rev. Greg Godwin officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va. Pallbearers will be members of the family.
Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008, at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton where Athens Chapter No. 33 of the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sallie's honor to the Concord United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 746, Athens, WV 24712.
